Eye contact with passing cars

In eighth grade, I nearly got into a fight at a dance for maintaining eye contact too long. This was my first lesson in the unspoken time limits of eye contact. Still today, if I keep eye contact too long with men they think I'm trying to fight them. If I keep it too long with women it apparently means I'm trying to have sex with them.

But if a car is passing me on the highway, the normal eye contact rules are lifted and we can keep it for 2-3 times as long. No fights, no sex. Just mutual curiosity. This fascinates me.
